The proposed Pink Line Corridor of Metro Railway, Kolkata, between Baranagar and Barrackpore, has received a big boost after Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) granted a No Objection Certificate. This decision has cleared the execution of the Baranagar-Barrackpore Metro project along BT Road over a length of 12 Km in the northern fringes of Kolkata.
The project faced a major roadblock for many years and did not get approval due to a long-pending issue of shifting underground pipelines for the metro work.
“Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has granted the No Objection Certificate for closure of the existing 48-inch diameter water transmission line along BT Road. In a letter dated 24.08.2026, Administrator and Municipal Commissioner, KMC Smt. Smita Pandey has intimated the same to General Manager Projects, of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL),” a statement from the Kolkata Metro authorities said on Tuesday (August 25).
Positing on his social media handle, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari appreciated the move and said that this additional line will help in rapid transit in the city and deliver modern transport to the people.
“The progress on this 12-kilometer corridor displays what focused administrative determination can achieve. By pairing transit expansion with robust civic safeguards including the construction of a new dedicated water transmission pipeline, safeguarding the city’s essential potable water supply while clearing the path for mass transit infrastructure, is a true demonstration of coordinated efforts and sustainable development,” Mr Adhikari further added.
In the letter given by KMC, which was also shared by the CM on his social stated that the existing 48-inch pipe will be replaced by a 72-inch pipe.
Kolkata has the oldest metro lines in India, however, the number of completely functioning metro lines is still at two. However, two other lines also have truncated services in the city. This Pink line will help in taking the number of higher.
