A history-sheeter accused in the recent murder of a man in Neyveli, Cuddalore district was shot in the leg by the police after he allegedly attacked police personnel at Pulavankuppam in the early hours on Wednesday (August 26, 2026).
According to the police, the murder took place on August 16 when Naresh Kumar (26) of Vadakuthu was hacked to death during a clash between two rival gangs in Neyveli. Police said the clash was linked to previous enmity between Anand Raj of Neyveli and Gopi of Vadakuthu.
The Neyveli Township police registered a case against 16 persons including the prime suspect Gopi and arrested 14 persons in connection with the murder.
Police said a team traced the accused Gopi to a casuarina grove in Pulavankuppam near Neyveli where he was hiding. When confronted, he allegedly attacked police constables Pandiarajan and Vijayasozhan with a machete.
Neyveli Township Inspector Senthil Kumar immediately pulled out his service pistol and shot Gopi in the right leg. The accused was taken to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital while the injured police personnel were admitted to the Neyveli General Hospital.
