A three-storey building collapsed during demolition work in Regarpura in Karol Bagh on Friday, killing a labourer and injuring three others, the police said, adding that one of the injured is in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 11.15 a.m. at a residential building on Pyare Lal Road.

According to preliminary findings, the building was being demolished by a private contractor engaged by its owners. The police said no permission had been obtained from the concerned agency.

The police have detained the building owners and contractor for questioning. Further legal action will follow after verification of the facts, said a senior officer.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call about the collapse at 11.49 a.m., following which it rushed a team to the spot.

Those trapped were pulled from under the debris. One of the labourers, Sheikh Shamshad, succumbed to his injuries.

Injuries to head, limbs

An injured identified as Mohammad Ayub sustained a head injury and a fracture on his right hand. He was referred to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. His condition remains critical. Sheikh Saidul sustained limb injuries and is undergoing treatment at Jeevan Mala Hospital while Rafik-Ul, the third injured, suffered minor injuries and was later discharged, the police said.

A DFS officer said the ground floor and two upper floors collapsed during the demolition work, trapping the labourers.
