Her stellar performance stands out beyond tears

Her stellar performance stands out beyond tears

In Tamil cinema, ‘Sowcar’ Janaki is widely known for her tragic, tearful roles. However, several films stand out precisely because of her highly versatile performances.

After she played sentimental roles ever since her debut, she was introduced in a strikingly different avatar in director Dada Mirasi’s Puthiya Paravai (1964). In this remake of the Bengali film Shesh Anka, Sivaji Ganesan chose ‘Sowcar’ Janaki to play Chithra, a nightclub singer, as well as the wife who seemingly returns from the dead. However, Dada Mirasi was reluctant to cast ‘Sowcar’ Janaki, who had only portrayed family-oriented, sentimental characters until then, in such an ultra-modern role. Yet, he eventually agreed. ‘Sowcar’ Janaki happily accepted the challenge. In a interview to The Hindu later, she said, “Honestly, watching me weep non-stop exasperated me. I was stagnating. That was when Sivaji Ganesan offered me Pudhiya Paravai and I grabbed it. Director Dada Mirasi was not convinced, but Sivaji stood his ground.”

When the film was released, Sivaji Ganesan’s decision proved right. About an hour into the movie, ‘Sowcar’ Janaki is introduced as a singer and dancer with the iconic song, “Paartha Gnabagam Illaiyo”. From the very beginning, an air of mystery lingers across her face. Later, when she poses as the deceased wife to compel the hero to confess to his crime, the song plays again. Her expression changes completely in this sequence; her eyes visibly search for the truth in Sivaji’s face. Undoubtedly, this can be considered one of the most important roles of her career.

Speaking to The Hindu about the film in 2011, she remarked, “I had to work in between the lines, because a heroine doing an out-and-out vamp would be deplorable. I added my own nuances.”

It was director K. Balachander who offered distinct roles to an actress otherwise confined to tear-jerking characters. ‘Sowcar’ Janaki shone in diverse roles across his films, including Neerkumizhi, Ethir Neechal, Bama Vijayam, Thillu Mullu, and Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal. Her performance in the 1967 film Bama Vijayam was highly acclaimed. The plot revolves around an actress moving next door, prompting three women in a joint family — Parvathi, Seetha, and Rukmini — to pretend to be wealthy to gain her attention. ‘Sowcar’ Janaki played Parvathi, delivering a brilliant performance as a woman constantly scheming to win the actress’s friendship. Although veterans like T.S. Balaiah and Major Sundarrajan delivered stellar performances, ‘Sowcar’ Janaki outshone them in many scenes.

In the 1968 film Ethir Neechal, she played Pattu Maami, an ardent cinema enthusiast. Introduced with the dialogue, “Is he a big station master like Sivaji in the movie Anbu Karangal?”, she hilariously peppers her speech with film references throughout the story. Every scene featuring her is highly entertaining. In particular, the timeless duet “Aduthaathu Ambujatha Paarthela”, which she performs alongside Srikanth, remains an all-time classic.

The 1981 comedy Thillu Mullu brought ‘Sowcar’ Janaki back to the screen in a different light. She played Meenakshi Duraisamy, an affluent woman with a passion for theatre, who happens to look exactly like the real-life ‘Sowcar’ Janaki. When the hero’s boss wants to meet his mother, the hero begs Meenakshi to play the part. Shocked, she reacts, “A mother role? I’ve never done one so far; will the audience accept it?”, before agreeing. Every scene she appears in afterward is an absolute riot. At one point, unable to handle the strict boss, she laments, “I’ve played so many roles, but this acting is too difficult. I can’t do it, man. Please let me off the hook. You’ve killed me, you’ve killed me!”, leaving audiences roaring with laughter.

Despite proving her range across such remarkably diverse roles, the fact that she was continually offered tragic, weeping characters remains one of the enduring enigmas of Tamil cinema.
