The Tamil Nadu government has assured Keralam that it will review the restrictions imposed on the transportation of construction materials, including rough stones and aggregates, to the State. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay gave the assurance to Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan during a meeting held on the sidelines of the Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier decided to regulate the transportation of construction materials, including rough stones, khandas, boulders and materials such as M-sand, metal jelly, ballast, mill stones, hand chakais, and stones used for building and road construction to other States. The restrictions were imposed to ensure adequate supplies within Tamil Nadu.

A statement issued by the Keralam Chief Minister’s Office on Friday said Mr. Vijay informed Mr. Satheesan during the meeting that the State government would consider exempting Keralam from the restrictions imposed on the transportation of construction materials, including aggregates to other States.

Mr. Satheesan had urged Tamil Nadu to review the decision, citing “the special circumstances” in Keralam.

It was also agreed that officials of the two States would hold further discussions on the matter and that an appropriate decision would be taken soon. The Chief Minister had earlier written to his Tamil Nadu counterpart requesting a review of the restrictions.
