Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old man in Lal Bagh, the police said on Sunday. They were nabbed after a manhunt was launched across Delhi and Uttarakhand covering around 550 km.
The accused, Aman alias Mulla, 26, and Anuj alias Moni, 20, were arrested near Chappar toll plaza in Uttarakhand while travelling in a rented car.
According to the police, they received calls about a stabbing and firing incident in Lal Bagh at 11.30 p.m. on August 12. The victim was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. He had firearm injuries, with entry and exit wounds in the abdomen and back, and a stab injury on his back.
According to an eyewitness, he and the victim had gone to a nearby shop when they encountered Mr. Aman, an alleged member of the Sahib Salmani Brother Gang, and another man.
An altercation broke out and the two men allegedly threatened them before leaving. The police said the accused returned when the two were on their way back and opened fire. The eyewitness escaped while the victim was shot and stabbed, the police said.
A dedicated team was formed to trace the accused. During the investigation, Mr. Anuj was also identified as a suspect. He was wanted in connection with another murder case lodged at the Jahangirpuri police station, the police said. Intelligence inputs indicated that the accused had moved towards Haridwar, but they kept changing their location.
Officers correlated technical inputs with field intelligence and followed their movement. They were intercepted near the Chappar toll plaza after covering 550 km, the police said.
Mr. Aman, a resident of Lal Bagh, has six criminal cases against him while Mr. Anuj has been involved in 15 cases, the police said.
