The Telangana BJP is banking heavily on its traditional support among upper caste and urban graduates in the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Graduates’ constituency, where nearly six lakh eligible voters are expected to play a decisive role.
Party leaders believe that a focused drive to maximise graduate voter enrolment could significantly improve the BJP’s prospects. Unlike regular elections, enrolment for graduates’ constituency polls must be done afresh for every election. Any graduate who completed a degree at least three years earlier is eligible to register once the Election Commission issues the election notification.
Candidates in graduates’ constituency elections contest without party symbols, although political parties officially endorse nominees through ‘B’ forms and actively campaign for them. The party plans an extensive awareness and enrolment campaign once the notification is issued.
Party leaders have also dismissed suggestions that recent student-led protests or setbacks in certain byelections could impact its performance. “MLC elections have a distinct electorate and voting pattern. They cannot be directly compared with other byelections,” said a senior leader.
