Nanguneri SEZ

The Nanguneri Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has remained only on paper for nearly 30 years. No people’s representative, including the local MLA, MP and other dignitaries, has paid attention to reviving the project and commencing the work. The objective of the project is to strengthen the industrial base to create more employment opportunities. The government should take immediate steps to revive the project and ensure that its intended benefits reach the people at the earliest.

Laudable initiative

This is with reference to the article, “Sustained efforts taken by the police make 34 Tirunelveli villages drug-free” published in The Hindu on August 13, 2026. The intelligence network devised by the Tirunelveli district police involving anonymous informers and awareness campaigns to create 34-drug free villages in the district is a praiseworthy drug-control strategy. These measures enable the public and law and enforcement officers to work in unison to weed out drug menace from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Parking violation

Parking of two-wheelers in ‘No parking areas’ in the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai is a common sight. Despite the signboard prohibiting parking in-front of the Mahatma Gandhi market in Palayamkottai and Smart bazar at Kokkirakulam, customers routinely leave their vehicles there, hindering pedestrians who use the roadside to move around. It is to be noted that there are also separate parking spaces available at both locations. Even though a police constable has been assigned near the Palayamkottai market to maintain public safety, he has failed to curb the menace. The concerned traffic authorities are responsible for the misuse of the place. Their duty does not end with merely erecting “No Parking” boards. They should also ensure that the restriction is strictly enforced.

Rajakumar Arulanandham,

Palayamkottai.
