Cauvery Committee, Authority to meet on Tuesday to review water situation

Cauvery Committee, Authority to meet on Tuesday to review water situation

Posted on August 10, 2026 By admin

With Tamil Nadu realising a little over 4.5 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft.) as mandated by the the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) this month, the two bodies are holding their meetings on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.

As on August 6, for which the data released by the Central Water Commission (CWC) are available, the lower riparian State realised about 4.6 tmc ft in the current month. Cumulatively (since June 1), the total amount of quantum received was around 8.3 tmc ft. In a normal year, the State should have got around 49 tmc ft. till now.

On July 28, the CWRC directed Karnataka to ensure that Tamil Nadu realised, at Biligundlu (the gauge and discharge (G&D) site being used by the CWC on the inter-State border),  3,500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) of water for 15 days, starting from July 29. Two days later, the CWMA endorsed the Committee’s decision.

As on date, the combined storage of four reservoirs in Karnataka was around 88 tmc ft. against the total capacity of 114.57 tmc ft.  In the last two-odd months, the reservoirs have cumulatively received 77.75 tmc ft. and discharged 21.46 tmc ft.  As for the Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu, the storage was 40.35 tmc ft. against the capacity of 93.47 tmc ft.
