The view from India Newsletter A new security architecture in West Asia?

When an oil-rich Persian Gulf kingdom, a South Asian nuclear power, and a NATO member decide to ink a defence agreement, the move, in addition to pointing to evolving security alliances between countries, foretells a significance shift in West Asia’s security architecture. 

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye signed a joint defence agreement in Mecca August 7, 2026, committing to “collective defence” and “collective deterrence”. The three countries have declared that they would treat an armed attack against any one of them as one against them all. The development comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is under attack from Yemen’s Houthis and West Asia remains engulfed in the ongoing war against Iran. 

Why is this triple alliance, and the agreement signed at the Mecca Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence, in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, significant? As our Foreign Affairs editor Stanly writes, the deal brings together three major powers in a common security framework. “Defence partnership and military interoperability among them could expand at a time when an overstretched U.S. is confronting the limits of its power in the region. The alliance also provides greater strategic space for Turkiye and Pakistan in West Asia. Other smaller states in the region might be tempted to join, while powers that have uneasy relations with the alliance’s members, including India, the UAE, Israel and Iran, could seek their own counterbalancing arrangements. West Asia’s security architecture could therefore undergo profound changes, accelerating the region’s post-American transition,” he explains in this profile.  

Commenting on this apparently formidable alliance and agreement, The Hindu editorial today notes that the agreement shows the growing appetite of regional powers for formal security pacts. “Türkiye, which has long sought a bigger role in West Asia, will gain more strategic space. Pakistan, traditionally a South Asian regional power overshadowed by India, is also seeking to expand its role as a West Asia security provider and mediator. The alliance would allow the three countries to deepen defence cooperation and military interoperability though it is too early to say whether it would help them address their security challenges,” it says, adding that “the credibility of the Mecca Agreement will ultimately depend on whether the three partners can turn their political commitment into a credible deterrent, which is currently non-existent.”  

Meanwhile, we are also tracking Iran’s statement on “nearing a final pact” with Oman to define new shipping lanes between them through the Strait of Hormuz, reiterating that the U.S. must meet other conditions, including compensation and an end to sanctions and military threats, before the strategic waterway is reopened. No respite in Gaza 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (August 9, 2026) rejected a Gaza peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, vowing no military pullout until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed.  “Israel rejects the 15-point document,” Mr. Netanyahu said, referring to a plan endorsed in late July by Hamas. The existing “ceasefire” has already proved to be a sham. Since the October 2025 “ceasefire” alone, over 1,250 people have been killed in the Israeli attacks, most of them civilians, according to Gaza health ⁠officials. The total death toll in Gaza since October 2023 stands at around 74,000 people, while at least 174,250 have been wounded.

Sri Lanka: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on August 5, 2026 urged the Sri Lankan leadership to hold the long-delayed elections to the Provincial Councils “at the earliest” and to “fully implement” constitutional provisions to meet the aspirations of the Tamil people. During this day-long visit, Mr. Misri met the Sri Lankan leadership and discussed ways to expedite India-backed energy, infrastructure and technology projects.
