Five persons, including four of a family, died as the car they were travelling in rammed a stationary water tanker on the Pollachi-Udumalpet stretch of National Highway 83 at Thippampatti on Sunday.

The police identified the deceased as E. Kanagaraj, 42, of MLA Street at Madukkarai Market, his wife D. Boomamaheshwari, 42, their daughters K. Namrutha, 21, and K. Aarthi, 24, and their family friend A. Ramu, 35, of Oor Gounder Street at Madukkarai.

The accident occurred around 1 p.m., when the car heading towards Madukkarai rammed the rear side of a water tanker that had been parked to water plants in the median. All the five persons died on the spot.

Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police; Pollachi Sub-Division’s Deputy Superintendent of Police and Gomangalam Inspector rushed to the spot. The Gomangalam police registered a case. The police said further investigation was under way to determine what caused the accident.
