Having obtained 30 patents and 28 copyrights, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, currently involved in securing Geographical Indications (GIs) for its regional products, is awaiting approval for 15 more patents.

The notable accomplishments in patents, copyrights, and advancement of Geographical Indications (GIs), have positioned Bharathiar University as a front-ranking varsity in Intellectual property rights (IPR). Botany, Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Electronics and Instrumentation, Nanoscience and Technology, Chemistry, Physics, Medical Physics, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Information Technology, Textiles and Apparel Design, Biochemistry, Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, and blended Programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Bio-Science and Mathematics figure among the fields with the portfolio of patents, said M Sumathy, Director, IPR Cell.

Real-world issues in healthcare, environmental preservation, agriculture, advanced materials, renewable energy, smart technology, and sustainable manufacturing are addressed by its patented ideas, Prof. Sumathy said, adding: “Innovations in wound-healing hydrogels, nanocomposite materials, humidity sensors, biomedical applications, wastewater treatment technology, and cybersecurity solutions are among the most recent patents”.

By raising awareness and fostering research on Geographical Indications (GIs), the university also helps to preserve and promote India’s traditional knowledge and region-specific products including textiles, garments, and knitting, Prof. Sumathy said.

“We are currently in the process of commercialising these innovations and have sought support from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology,” Registrar R. Rajavel said.

To promote development, management, protection, and monetisation of intellectual property, the university has also adopted an institutional IPR policy. The ongoing efforts have resulted in the growing number of patents and increased understanding of intellectual property among faculty members, scholars, and students, the Registrar said.
