A 25-year-old youth, Sanjay Kumar, was hacked to death at Thenkarai in Madurai district police limits on Thursday evening.
The police suspect that a previous motive could have led to the murder.
When the deceased was at a coconut godown, a three-member armed gang attacked him with lethal weapons and killed him.
The body has been taken to Government Rajaji Hospital.
Kadupatti police are investigaing.
