A Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC), Tiruchi team, on Thursday arrested a Work Inspector serving in the Water Resources Department in Tiruchi district on bribery charges.
The arrest of Work Inspector G. Loganathan, 41, serving in the New Kattalai High Level Canal Section – 1 was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by C. Edward of Mudikandam in Srirangam taluk.
DVAC sources said Mr. Edward had been working as a labourer for Joyce Prameela of Mudikandam. Ms. Prameela had obtained permission from the tahsildar of Srirangam to lift silt from a pond controlled by the Water Resources Department at Mekkudi.
A few days ago, Mr. Edward was engaged in lifting silt from the pond when Mr. Loganathan intervened and questioned him. Even as Mr. Edward told Mr. Loganathan that permission had already been obtained from the tahsildar, the Work Inspector allegedly demanded ₹4,000 as bribe to allow lifting of silt. A trap was laid by the DVAC team which arrested Mr. Loganathan in his office when he took the money, the sources said.
