The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has condemned the controversial remarks made by Hindutva ideologue T.G. Mohandas against the student protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi that culminated in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel on July 26, Mr. Mohandas had threatened that he “would have shot” the protestors at Jantar Mantar if he were in control. A former head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s State intellectual cell, he had said in another video that secular women who take part in protests “enjoy being gangraped.”
K. B. Sreekumar, Saha Prantha Karyavah (South Kerala) of the RSS, said in a statement that Mr. Mohandas’s comments on recent protest are “his personal thoughts and he is not an RSS official at any level.” Mr. Sreekumar said the organisation does not agree with his views and “such views should be condemned in every highest possible manner”.
In a 30-minute video, Mr. Mohandas spoke at length about how he would have tackled the student protests by the CJP and other major Opposition outfits against the NEET exam irregularities. “I will impose a curfew in about a 4 square kilometre area around Jantar Mantar. Then I would announce thrice for the crowd to disperse. After that, I will open fire. People will scatter away and run for their lives. Some may die, some may suffer disabilities. Within four hours, the situation will be calm. Then I will collect the bodies and take them to hospitals,” he said.
“Gangrapes will happen. In this case, there won’t be any complaints as these are people who like being raped. There are women who like being raped, especially Leftists, secular, democratic and proletarians. Now if someone dies during this, they will turn the person into a martyr,” he said.
Kerala’s Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala had ordered a police investigation against the controversial remarks made by Mr. Mohandas. The probe was initiated following complaints lodged by the representatives of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), Sudents’ Federation of India (SFI), Youth Congress and the People’s Democratic Party. He had directed P. Prakash, Inspector General of Police, to carry out an investigation.
Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan had demanded that the government should register a case against Mr. Mohandas while pointing out that his controversial statements “reflected the Sangh Parivar’s desire to curb dissent.”
Mohandas says remarks ‘satirical, hypothetical’
After his statements invited widespread protests, Mr. Mohandas clarified that his remarks were intended to be “satirical” and “hypothetical”. He alleged that short clips of his comments were taken out of context.
