Minister for Finance N. Marie Wilson inspected on Saturday some of the ongoing development works in Nanguneri and Radhapuram Assembly segments and exhorted the officials to complete the projects before the stipulated duration.
One of the works inspected by the Minister was the preliminary works for the widening of Nanguneriyan Channel and digging of a channel to take water from this channel to 46 irrigation tanks under Nanguneri Periyakulam. The objective behind this project is to use the surplus water of Pachchaiyar River for irrigation, which is now going waste into the sea after it enters the Tamirabharani River.
As per this plan, the surplus water of Pachchaiyar River will be taken to the 46 irrigation tanks under the Nanguneri Periyakulam by digging a new bypass channel for about 20.55 km and the feeding channels for about 40.95 km.
The detailed project report and the environment impact assessment reports of this scheme are being prepared and will be submitted with the Central Government for its mandatory approval. Upon the formal approval from the Union Government, the Government Order for the execution of this scheme and the tender will be released.
Once this project is completed, 3,690 hectares of land under these 46 irrigation tanks will get hitherto wasted surplus water of Pachchaiyar River for irrigation.
He also reviewed the progress in the construction of the 3-storey building at the Nanguneri government hospital and met the patients there.
After inspecting the construction of 3 MLD sewage treatment plant at Kalakkad, the minister also reviewed the progress in the construction of the daily market in the same area and the Primary Health Centre construction at Thirukkurungudi.
In the afternoon, Mr. Wilson inspected the reconstruction of Sooravali check-dam beyond Panagudi which suffered extensive damage in the floods in the Western Ghats and distributed ration cards to 1,000 beneficiaries.
In Kottappuli, one of the 13 coastal hamlets of Tirunelveli district, the Minister reviewed the progress of the groyne construction, as the structure is being built with boulders to protect the fibreglass boats and the houses close to the shoreline from heavy tides.
He exhorted the officials to complete the works within the stipulated deadline while ensuring the prescribed quality.
District Collector Anand Mohan accompanied the Minister.
