Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Park railway station, which was under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), through video conferencing from Jalandhar Cantonment railway station in Punjab on Friday. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar participated in the inauguration ceremony held at the station.

Park railway station, located opposite Dr. MGR Chennai Central station and serving as the key link to the Moore Market complex (MMC) suburban railway station, has been redeveloped at a cost of ₹14 crore. The station, located on the Beach-Tambaram and Chengalpattu corridor, also serves as a link station for the commuters using the Mass Rapid Transit system (MRTS). The station, coming under the Chennai division of Southern Railway, has been refurbished with several passenger amenities, including a new ticket booking office, spacious waiting area, enhanced platform shelters, and digital passenger information systems. The railway station is being given a new outlook with a towering entrance structure, coach guidance displays, and passenger lifts linking all four platforms.

Constructed in 1931, it was one of the 75 railway stations throughout the country redeveloped under the ABSS project. Among the other railway stations inaugurated on Friday, included two railway stations of Salem division in Chinnasalem and Coonoor, four railway stations in Palakkad division in Tirur, Thalassery, Parapanangadi, and Nilambur, and two stations of Thiruvananthapuram division in Chalakudi and Angamalli.

Vipin Kumar, Additional General Manager of Southern Railway, said under the ABSS, 75 stations in the State are being redeveloped at a cost of around ₹3,300 crore. He said the share of revenue for the State this year was ₹7,611 crore, which is close to nine times the average annual allocation between 2009 and 2014, of the total earned gross revenue of nearly ₹2.79 lakh crore in 2025-26.

A total of 15 railway stations of Chennai division have been undergoing redevelopment under the ABSS. Of the 15 railway stations two railway stations of St. Thomas Mount and Sullurpeta were inaugurated last year. The remaining 12 railway stations are Beach, Perambur, Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Chengalpattu, Guindy, Ambattur, Mambalam, Guduvanchery, Thiruttani, Jolarpettai and Gummidipoondi.
