Turmeric prices has crossed ₹17,000 a quintal at the Erode regulated market as arrivals have slowed down and there is uncertainty over the next crop.
Harvesting of the turmeric crop, which began in February in Erode and Dharmapuri districts and parts of Karnataka, concluded in March. The produce is traded at the regulated markets in Erode, Chithode and Perundurai, besides the Agricultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing Societies in Karungalpalayam and Gobichettipalayam.
At the Erode regulated market, finger turmeric fetched between ₹12,699 and ₹17,122 a quintal on Thursday and between ₹11,598 and ₹17,402 on Friday. Bulb turmeric was sold between ₹12,139 and ₹14,889 on Thursday and between ₹10,639 and ₹15,050 on Friday.
M. Sathyamurthy, secretary of the Erode Turmeric Merchants and Godown Owners’ Association, told The Hindu that arrivals had declined across the country as weather conditions remained unfavourable in major turmeric-growing regions.
He said uncertainty surrounded the upcoming crop as water was not released into the Kalingarayan canal owing to inadequate storage in the Bhavanisagar dam. The delay could affect the crops in Kalingarayan ayacut, where turmeric was cultivated extensively.
Mr. Sathyamurthy said dry conditions also persisted in Dharmapuri, while Marathwada in Maharashtra, another major turmeric-producing region in the country, had witnessed below-normal rainfall, affecting crop prospects and market arrivals. He added that buffer stocks accumulated over the past decade had largely depleted, further tightening supplies.
“The progress of the southwest monsoon will determine the market trend in the coming weeks. If the monsoon remains deficient, prices are likely to stay firm and move higher,” he said.
Mr. Sathyamurthy said turmeric futures on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) were trading above ₹19,000 a quintal, reflecting bullish market sentiment. Turmeric prices had last crossed ₹17,000 a quintal in March 2024, too.
