Vellayil in Kozhikode city is set to receive a facelift through two development projects worth ₹5 crore. The Avikkal Thodu development project has been allocated ₹3 crore, while the Vellayil Fishing Harbour renovation project has been earmarked ₹2 crore by the State government.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced the allocation of funds in his reply to the 2026–27 Budget presentation recently. Avikkal Thodu, an urban canal in the city, carries stormwater but has become heavily polluted by untreated sewage and solid waste from surrounding areas. The deteriorating water quality has raised public health and environmental concerns among residents.
Assuring that the projects will be taken up at the earliest, Kozhikode North MLA K. Jayanth said: “The canal will be properly covered with slabs. The vacant space next to it will be developed into a recreation area.”
He added that thousands of fisherfolk depend on the Vellayil Fishing Harbour. “At present, the harbour is outdated and ill-equipped, lacking basic facilities. The renovated harbour will have all essential amenities, including restrooms,” he said. Regarding the funding, he said, “If the allocated funds prove insufficient, additional funds can be sourced from the MLA fund.”
“The breakwater and jetty of the harbour will be extended, and a separate building will be constructed for storage. Basic facilities such as drinking water will be ensured at the harbour,” Vellayil division councillor Soufiya N.P. said.
Welcoming the project, A.P. Abdullakutty, president of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the funds should be strategically utilised to transform the harbour into a modern, world-class facility. The harbour should be equipped with basic infrastructure, proper sanitation, and better marketing and sales facilities.
He also suggested considering the scope of establishing a children’s museum on fishing, which could enhance the area’s tourism potential.
“Renovation of Lions Park is being undertaken by the Kozhikode Corporation and is in its final stages. Together, these developments will significantly transform the beach area, benefiting residents,” Mr. Jayanth added.
