Squash | Joshna set for record seventh Asian Games appearance

Veteran squash star Joshna will strive to add her Asian Games medal collection.

Veteran squash player Joshna Chinappa has achieved a feat unmatched by any Indian by qualifying for her seventh consecutive Asian Games. The 39-year-old sealed her place after battling past Unnati Tripathi in a gruelling five-game encounter during the selection trials at the ISTA Academy here on Sunday.

Drawn in a challenging pool featuring Rathika Seelan, Akansha Salunkhe, Unnati and Pooja Arthi, Joshna was tested by a group packed with talented younger players. The The five-time Asian Games medallist admitted the format was demanding, especially with players having to play two matches a day.

“It was hard because I don’t play two matches a day ever. It’s always one match a day. I also found my draw pretty tough. Rathika, Pooja and the others are girls I train with here. I wanted to win all my matches and am happy that I did,” said Joshna

The former World No. 10 said representing India continues to be a special feeling, irrespective of how many times she has done it.

“It’s always special to play for India. It’s such a great feeling. I feel very blessed and it’s a great opportunity for me,” she said.

Joshna said India will field a formidable women’s squad at the Games. “We have a strong team this time with Anahat Singh, Tanvi Khanna and myself. The number four player will also be equally strong. I just hope that I can contribute,” she said.

Apart from the team event, Joshna expressed her desire to compete in the mixed doubles at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
