Farmers stage protest seeking crop loan waiver in Erode

Posted on June 10, 2026 By admin

Farmers affiliated to various organisations staged a protest at Modakkurichi on Wednesday (June 10 2026), demanding waiver of crop loans as promised by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during the election campaign. Holding bundles of sugarcane, the farmers raised slogans urging the State government to fulfil its assurance to waive crop loans.

Indefinite hunger strike planned

Easan Murugasamy, founder of the Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Association, told reporters that farmers from 30 districts in the State would launch an indefinite hunger strike from June 22 if the demand was not met. The agitation would continue through democratic means until the government implemented a comprehensive crop loan waiver.

Mr. Murugasamy alleged that the Government Order issued for the loan waiver had provided only limited relief to farmers. Many beneficiaries had received only a small amount and that the measure had failed to address the debt burden faced by cultivators.

Pointing out that farmers were struggling due to inadequate prices for agricultural produce and rising input costs, he said many were unable to repay their loans. He urged the Chief Minister to honour the election promise on crop loan waiver. The protest was organised to draw the government’s attention to the issue.
