Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a review meeting on the June 3 Malviya Nagar fire tragedy at the Secretariat on Friday and directed that high-rises operating in violation of prescribed norms will be sealed immediately.
As many as 21 people, including several foreign nationals, died in the blaze at the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast facility after a fire started on the ground floor of the six-storey structure in the south Delhi residential area.
“Reviewing the safety of older high-rise buildings, the Chief Minister directed that wherever violations of norms are found, upper floors should be vacated and sealing or closure action taken as required,” stated a release from her office. It added that Ms. Gupta instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to ensure strict compliance with the existing building by-laws.
The CM directed officials to prepare updated records of construction activities every three months using drone surveys, satellite imagery and digital mapping.
‘Serious hazard’
She also identified fixed glass windows as a “serious hazard” and said all buildings must have openable windows and balconies. “In the event of a fire, such features provide occupants with an opportunity to escape or be rescued by emergency teams,” read the statement.
The CM also called for developing a system to maintain a digital record of responses to distress calls, from the receipt of the call to the arrival of firefighting teams at the site.
