The driving licences of 293 motorists in Salem district were temporarily suspended in April for various traffic violations, including overspeeding, riding without helmets and using mobile phones while driving, Collector K. Elambahavath said at the monthly road safety review meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday (May 29, 2026).
Chairing the meeting, Mr. Elambahavath said the district administration had been continuously implementing awareness programmes to reduce road accidents and promote safer travel. Monthly review meetings involving officials from the Police, Transport, Revenue and Highways Departments were being conducted to monitor road safety measures and identify ways to prevent accidents and fatalities.
The Collector instructed officials to identify accident-prone stretches and undertake joint inspections to evolve measures to prevent recurring accidents. He also directed officials to coordinate their efforts and take appropriate action against motorists violating traffic rules.
The suspended licences pertained to offences such as overspeeding, riding without helmets, using mobile phones while driving, carrying excess passengers and transporting overloaded goods. Appealing to motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, the Collector urged two-wheeler riders to wear helmets, four-wheeler occupants to fasten seat belts and all road users to adhere to prescribed speed limits.
Officials were also instructed to install warning signboards such as “Accident-Prone Zone”, “Drive Slowly”, “Bus Stop” and “Temple Area” at locations where accidents frequently occur. Necessary infrastructure, including speed breakers and centre medians, would also be provided at vulnerable stretches. The Collector further directed officials to intensify road safety awareness campaigns to sensitise a larger section of the public on safe road practices and accident prevention measures.
District Revenue Officer R. Ravikumar, Superintendent of Police Gautam Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Ankit Singh and officials from various departments attended the meeting.
