A police officer sustained a fracture and several of others narrowly escaped serious injuries after they allegedly came under attack by a group of youngsters, suspected to be in an inebriated state, near Marottichodu at Unichira, near Thrikkakara, in the early hours of Saturday.
Kochi City Traffic East Inspector Udayakumar suffered a fractured hand after the accused confronted the police team, which had reached the spot following a complaint of disturbance from residents of a nearby apartment complex. Video footage has since emerged showing the accused blocking the police vehicle and engaging in a heated exchange with the officers.
Five persons were arrested in the aftermath of the melee. They were identified as Akshay, 25, of Wayanad; Jineesh, 38, of Kollam; Ajmal, 20, and Althaf, 21, of Thiruvananthapuram; and Shamsudheen, 36, of Nemmara. All were reportedly employed as security personnel at a prominent shopping mall and were residing in a rented apartment in the neighbourhood.
The accused, subjected to medical examination at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery, allegedly continued to create a ruckus even at the police station. The Thrikkakara police will register a case invoking charges including assault, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, obstructing police duty, and causing public nuisance.
According to the police, the accused began creating a disturbance in their apartment around 12.30 a.m., prompting the caretaker of the complex to lodge a complaint with the police helpline. A control room vehicle was dispatched to the scene. However, instead of cooperating, the accused turned aggressive and allegedly pelted stones at the vehicle.
As the situation escalated, additional police teams were rushed to the spot. Inspector Udayakumar, who was on night patrol duty, also arrived to bring the situation under control. In the ensuing commotion, he fractured his hand after being struck by a stone. He is currently undergoing treatment.
The accused then reportedly retreated to their apartment and locked themselves inside, following which police broke in and took them into custody. Their arrests were recorded shortly thereafter. Reportedly, the accused even filmed the police personnel and questioned their authority to ‘trespass’ into their property and assault them.
