A viral video of over a dozen Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel surrounding the Kanpur Police Commissionerate office, created uproar on Saturday (May 23, 2026) when their Commandant went inside to meet senior police officials seeking justice for a ITBP constable’s mother whose hand amputated in a private nursing home due to alleged medical negligence.

Opposition parties and social media users on Saturday (May 23) criticised the Kanpur administration alleging such scenes points towards complete failure of the justice system forcing paramilitary personnel to go for a symbolic protest.

“The video shows how bad we are treating our paramilitary forces that they have to take control over a Commissionerate building in a symbolic kind of protest, its complete failure of the justice system. We have videos of the ITBP personnel moving with amputated hand for justice, but no one was listening to him, seeing his pain the commandant of ITBP along with dozens of personnel arrived to meet concerned officials for action, the whole government machinery in U.P. Is insensitive,” said Anil Yadav, a senior U.P. Congress leader.

The ITBP personnel accused doctors at a private hospital of negligence that allegedly led to the amputation of his mother’s right hand. He demanded a fair investigation and strict action against the hospital administration and the doctors involved.

“Dangerous picture from Uttar Pradesh. Paramilitary force ITBP surrounded the U.P. Commissioner’s office. The hand of the ITBP jawan’s mother was chopped off but the police did nothing to provide justice. ITBP jawans and officers took to the streets against this failing law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh,” wrote a user Varun Choudhary, on X.

The Kanpur police said the matter has been sent to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for re-examination.

“A few days ago, an ITBP soldier filed a petition alleging medical negligence at the hospital, including the amputation of his mother’s hand. Since the case involved medical negligence, the matter was referred to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for investigation in compliance with the Honorable Supreme Court’s directives. As per the rules, the CMO constituted a committee of doctors to investigate all aspects of the case. After receiving the investigation report, the applicant appeared again with his senior officers and raised objections to some points in the report. After discussions with both parties, the application regarding the objections has been sent to the CMO’s office for re-examination. Since the case involves medical negligence and the treatment process, it is essential that medical experts examine all aspects of the treatment, diagnosis, and medical procedures. Further legal action will be determined based on whatever facts emerge from the investigation,” said Vipin Tada, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and order), Kanpur.
