IPL 2026 SRH vs RCB: Sunrisers prove too hot for Royal Challengers

IPL 2026 SRH vs RCB: Sunrisers prove too hot for Royal Challengers

There was no cautious build-up and respite for the bowlers.

Sunrisers Hyderabad launched into the Royal Challengers Bengaluru attack and never relented, producing a batting exhibition that laid the foundation for its 55-run victory in their IPL clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday (May 22, 2026).

Yet, in the broader context, the result barely caused a ripple. RCB had done enough to seal a top-of-the-table finish, while SRH remained in third place.

After Sunrisers opted to bat, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head refused to be intimidated by Bhuvneshwar Kumar — this edition’s leading wicket-taker — plundering 25 runs off his first two overs. Head greeted Rasikh Salam with three rasping boundaries before the 26-year-old sent the Australian’s off-stump flying with a searing yorker.

Abhishek earned two reprieves in as many overs, courtesy slips by Venkatesh Iyer and substitute Jordan Cox. The opener was also lucky when Devdutt Padikkal nearly pulled off a spectacular catch running back towards long-on but the ball brushed his fingertips and slipped out.

The southpaw brought up his maiden half-century against RCB before Cox pouched a miscued hit off Suyash Sharma. Heinrich Klaasen, who began cautiously, tore into Josh Hazlewood and smacked the pacer for 27 runs in an over. At the other end, Kishan quietly brought up his second half-century of the campaign against RCB.

The efforts helped SRH storm past 200 for the ninth time this season while Klaasen fell after raising his sixth fifty of the 19th edition. Nitish Kumar took over, his cameo leaving RCB with a mountain to climb.

The chase began with intent as Venkatesh, opening the innings for the first time since 2023, took on Pat Cummins and moved up a gear once spin was introduced. But, against the run of play, Eshan Malinga broke the first-wicket stand by dismissing Venkatesh. Soon, Virat Kohli perished to a slower ball from Sakib Hussain.

With Rajat Patidar and Padikkal attempting to rebuild, Cummins reintroduced Malinga. The Sri Lankan struck again by removing the left-hander. After Padikkal’s departure, RCB shifted towards ensuring a top-two finish. Patidar steered his side past the 166-run mark that confirmed his side a spot in Qualifier 1.
