In a shocking incident, street dogs had reportedly eaten away an amputated limb in the Government General Hospital (GGH), in Vijayawada, on Thursday (May 14, 2026). The incident created panic among the patients in the hospital.

According to sources, doctors removed the infected limb of a person in the hospital and kept it in a plastic bag for dumping it in biomedical waste. The Class-IV staff kept the limb on the first floor. In the meantime, a street dog picked up the plastic bag (in which the amputated limb was kept) and ran away.

Patients, attendants and the public who noticed the dogs eating the limb alerted the hospital staff. They chased away the dogs and brought the half-eaten limb back to the hospital. Patients allege that stray dogs were freely moving on the hospital premises creating panic among the public.

NTR district Collector G. Lakshmisha has ordered an inquiry into the incident, and directed the hospital authorities to take action against the negligent staff. Patients express concern over the negligence of the hospital staff in shifting the biomedical waste.

“An inquiry has been ordered on how the street dogs came up to the first floor and picked up the bag. Instructions have been given to the GGH officers to arrange CCTVs at the rooms where the biomedical waste was stored,” the Collector told The Hindu on Friday (May 15, 2026).
