The new government headed by C. Joseph Vijay has just stepped in and won the vote of confidence in the Legislative Assembly. Hence, it would be fair to assess their functioning only after some reasonable period, said Congress MP Karti Chidambaram here on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons, he said that for the first time, people have given a mandate to the Tamilaga Vettri Kalagam (TVK). “If any other party other than the TVK had assumed office, it wouldn’t have been correct as the mandate was for the TVK. Though the party (TVK) was short of majority, the votes for TVK suggested that the electorate looked for a change in Tamil Nadu, which was the reason for DMK-Congress being pushed to the second position,” he added.
The MP hoped that the new government would implement the welfare schemes, which were started by the previous government, in the larger interest of the beneficiaries. There are good and efficient officers in the State and it was for the rulers to utilise their services in the public interest. He said that the financial constraints could be overcome and it shouldn’t be a stumbling block as apprehended by some parties.
He did not see any force behind the imbroglio in the AIADMK. “They themselves were responsible for such a mess or as suspected by some people, even the BJP may be a reason” he replied to a query and said that the decision of the Congress to align with the TVK was a natural choice in the post-poll scenario.
The Congress MP said that the DMK should continue to be in the INDIA alliance and wished the TVK too joined the alliance at the national-level. “The DMK, no doubt, may be hurt, with the Congress moving towards the TVK in TN, but over a period of time, it would be normal,” he hoped.
