As model code ends, wall posters make a comeback in Tiruchi

With the Election Commission lifting the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) after the Assembly elections, wall posters, banners and graffiti are reappearing across Tiruchi, raising concerns over defacement of public spaces again.

During the election period, Tiruchi Corporation carried out extensive drives to remove political posters, banners and wall paintings from public places to enforce poll norms. However, the poster culture has now made a visible comeback. Walls along Tiruchi – Chennai Bypass near Senthaneerpuram and buildings around Central Bus Stand, Chathiram Bus Stand, Cantonment, Palakarai, TVS Tollgate, Thillai Nagar and Woraiyur are once again covered with posters. Flex boards put up for weddings and family functions have also surfaced at several prominent junctions.

Political posters and wall graffiti have long been associated with the State’s political culture. However, residents and civic activists say the unchecked practice not only mars the appearance of the city but also affects efforts to maintain cleanliness and urban aesthetics.

Despite beautification initiatives undertaken at major entry points, including the painting of overbridge walls and public structures, political outfits and private advertisers continue to deface public property.

To address the issue, the Corporation had earlier established designated advertisement spaces in all zones by erecting billboards for authorised poster displays. Officials said five such advertisement points had been created in each zone to discourage illegal wall pasting, and more designated spots would be established in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the Corporation has resumed enforcement drives to clear posters from public walls. Sanitary workers have been deployed for an hour every day, with nearly 10 conservancy workers engaged in each ward for the purpose. Civic officials said stricter enforcement measures would be intensified in the coming days to curb the menace.
