Increased imports buoy overall availability of natural gas in India in March 2026, despite fall in domestic production

Amidst the looming fuel supply disruptions due to the West Asia crisis, total natural gas available for sale in India grew 7.8% in March 2026, fuelled by an increase in imports of liquified natural gas (LNG), according to the latest government data. This increase in availability comes even though India’s net domestic production of natural gas for sale slipped 4.3% in March. March 2026 was the first month following the start of the West Asia crisis.

Separately, during a press briefing, Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, confirmed to reporters that the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) was looking into how it can resume services to West Asia.
