Four Assam police commandos were injured in an extremist attack in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district early Sunday (March 22, 2026) morning.

District officials said the assailants, suspected to be of a banned group, fired indiscriminately and lobbed several grenades at the commando camp at Jagun, close to the boundary with Arunachal Pradesh.

The commandos retaliated and the gunfight continued for about 30 minutes before the attackers slipped away. The United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Three of the four injured sustained grievous injuries. Police said they were rushed to a hospital. “We have launched an operation in coordination with other forces to find the attackers,” an official said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the attack. “Those who have done this will be caught,” he said.

The ULFA(I) said that Operation Bujoni was carried out in retaliation for the police’s repeated action against the banned outfit, and alleged drone attacks by the Army on its camps last year. It asked the State police force to “refrain from subversive activities” against the outfit, warning of retaliatory action.

Jagun is less than 50 km from the nearest point of Arunachal Pradesh’s border with Myanmar, where the ULFA(I) has its camps.
