Seven-member SIT to investigate assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday (March 14, 2026) constituted a special investigation team (SIT) for a thorough investigation into the assassination attempt on former Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on March 11.

The seven-member SIT, headed by a Deputy Inspector-General- level officer was formed “considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case”, Inspector-General of Police Bhim Sen Tuti said in an order, adding that the SIT “must complete the investigation promptly and thoroughly” and “adhering to the statutory timeframe”.

Mr. Abdullah had escaped unhurt in the assassination attempt during a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall, Greater Kailash, Jammu on March 11. where the accused, identified as Kamal Singh, came close to the former Chief Minister and attempted to open fire from close range.

“However, owing to the prompt action of the police personnel deployed with the protectee, the attempt was foiled,” the police said.

The police have arrested Mr. Singh, 63, a resident of Purani Mandi. According to the police, the firearm used in the crime was recovered from the possession of the accused. He told the police he had “own motives”. The accused, who owned shops, has no criminal record. 

The police said a first information report, No. 29/2026, under Section 109 BNS and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act has been registered at Gangyal Police Station in Jammu.

The SIT has been constituted after the three-time Chief Minister expressed concern over the security arrangements at the venue. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also spoken to Mr. Abdullah and assured investigation into the incident.
