Shivam Lohakare reaffirmed his growing reputation as the next big thing in Indian javelin, becoming the first from the country to cross the 80m mark en route to winning the fifth Indian Open Throws competition here on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Lohakare, with an 81.08m throw in his very first attempt of the season, was also the only athlete to cross the 80m mark in the competition. Kishore Jena, returning to action after almost a year, could only manage 74.75m and finished third.

Nishchay Phogat, meanwhile, added the under-18 discus gold to his shot put win from Saturday with another personal best even as Ujjawal Choudhary continued to impress, going past the 60m mark to better his own under-20 discus National record and clinch gold.

The results: Men: Discus: 1. Kirpal Singh (ONGC, 58.89m), 2. Dharamraj Yadav (Army, 55.75m), 3. Mohd. Saqlain (Kar, 55.47m); Javelin: 1. Shivam Lohakare (Army, 81.08m), 2. Anand Singh (SSCB, 76.94m), 3. Kishore Jena (Odi, 74.75m).

U-20: Discus: 1. Ujjawal Choudhary (JSW, 60.03m), 2. V. Vaibhav (HP, 55.44m), 3. Sahil Kadian (Har, 54.94m); Javelin: 1. Ashish Yadav (Army, 74.49m), 2. Rishabh Giri (Rel, 72.51m), 3. T. Dharanidharan (TN, 71.31m).

U-18: Discus: 1. Nishchay (Har, 63.90m), 2. Yash Jaglan (Har, 56.50m), 3. Virender Poonia (Raj, 55.46m); Javelin: 1. Vishal Patel (NCOE, 70.62m), 2. Rajat Kumar (UP, 70.52m), 3. Ayush Raj (Bih, 69.53m).

Women: U-20: Javelin: 1. Poonam (JSW, 49.50m), 2. Bhavya Pilania (JSW, 46.77m), 3. Shivani (UP, 40.45m).

U-18: Javelin: 1. Tanushri Mahalder (WB, 48.74m), 2. Misti Karmakar (WB, 45.54m), 3. Arya Mohite (Mah, 41.56m).
