Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met Premier of the Canadian province of British Columbia David Eby on Tuesday (January 13, 2026) to discuss prospects for LNG projects in the region, cooperation in green hydrogen, LPG imports and critical minerals, among other aspects relevant to the energy sector.

Informing about the meeting, Mr. Puri wrote on his social media, “Held excellent discussion on fruitful India-Canada partnership as India moves ahead with momentum towards attaining energy self-sufficiency, green transition and Net Zero targets under the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Mr. Eby is leading a trade mission to India and would be meeting be meeting government and business leaders in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Bengaluru. The objective is to “promote British Columbia’s business, critical minerals and sustainable wood products, supporting work to build a more independent economy”, read the government statement.

The outreach forms part of a larger diversification effort emanating from Ottawa as the North American country reels under “unjustified tariffs from the U.S.”

Important to note, Canada’s Minister for International Trade Maninder Sidhu on Wednesday (January 7, 2026) had also met Mr. Puri to discuss bilateral hydrocarbon trade between the two nations in November last year. The hydrocarbons trade between the two countries scaled $226.45 million in FY 2024-25 and held “substantial upside potential”, Mr. Puri had mentioned then.
