Hazare Trophy | All-round Mumbai gets the better of Uttarakhand

A large crowd turned up at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Friday to watch Rohit Sharma in action. The star batter fell for a first-ball duck, but Hardik Tamore entertained the fans with an unbeaten 82-ball 93 as Mumbai marched on with a 51-run win over Uttarakhand in its Vijay Hazare Trophy Group-C fixture.

Coming on the back of a massive hundred in the tournament opener against Sikkim, expectations were sky high from Rohit, but he was caught at deep fine-leg off pacer Devendra Bora off the final delivery of the first over, with Jagmohan Nagarkoti completing the catch after fumbling in his initial attempt.

While the spectators were heartbroken as Mumbai also lost Angkrish Raghuvanshi cheaply, brothers Musheer Khan (55, 56b, 7×4) and Sarfaraz Khan (55, 49b, 5×4, 1×6) stepped up and made the most of the reprieves to forge a 107-run partnership for the third wicket.

As the surface eased out, neither Sarfaraz nor Musheer seemed in a hurry as they played every ball on its merit and steadied the ship before left-arm spinner Mayank Mishra dismissed Musheer to break the partnership. In the following over, J. Suchith had Sarfaraz caught and bowled. Tamore took over after Mumbai lost a flurry of wickets and guided the side to 331 for seven.

Uttarakhand dropped plenty of catches in a sloppy show on the field, and Tamore made the most of the opportunities to bring up his third List-A fifty, adding 95 runs for the seventh wicket with Shams Mulani.

Chasing a tall total, Uttarakhand lost Kamal Singh early on, but Yuvraj Chaudhary scored a spirited 96-ball 96. However, he missed out on his second List-A century by a whisker after getting caught by Sarfaraz off a Shardul Thakur delivery.

After Yuvraj’s dismissal, J. Suchith showed resilience with a fifty, but with left-arm spinner Musheer getting into the act and claiming a couple of wickets, Mumbai had the last laugh.

Before he left Jaipur, Rohit interacted with young cricketers and clicked pictures to bring smiles to their faces.

The scores: Group C (Jaipur): Mumbai 331/7 in 50 overs (Hardik Tamore 93 n.o., Musheer Khan 55, Sarfaraz Khan 55) bt Uttarakhand 280/9 in 50 overs (Yuvraj Choudhary 96, J. Suchith 51).

Chhattisgarh 253 in 48.4 overs (Mayank Verma 64) lost to Punjab 254/1 in 42.1 overs (Harnoor Singh 115 n.o., Anmolpreet Singh 105 n.o.).

Sikkim 150 in 40.2 overs (Kranthi Kumar 40, Rajvardhan Hangargekar 4/21) lost to Maharashtra 153/2 in 18 overs (Prithvi Shaw 51).

Goa 285/9 in 50 overs (Lalit Yadav 104, Deepraj Gaonkar 71, Rohit Kumar 5/55) bt Himachal Pradesh 277 in 49.3 overs (Pukhraj Mann 126, Deepraj Gaonkar 5/50).
