Australia will lower flags to half-mast in a national gesture of mourning for the 16 people killed in a mass shooting on Bondi Beach, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday (December 15, 2025).

“Flags will fly at half-mast across the country today as we pay our respects to all those lost and all those injured,” Mr. Albanese said.

One of the gunmen suspected of shooting and killing the people has been named in local media as a man from the city’s southeast.

The alleged assailant was Naveed Akram from the Sydney suburb of Bonnyrigg, Australian public broadcaster ABC said, quoting an official speaking on condition of anonymity.

Police say one of the gunman was killed at the scene while another was critically injured. It was not clear if Akram was the surviving or deceased gunman, the ABC said.

Police have raided the man’s home, the broadcaster and other local media reported.
