Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP from Buxar on Sunday (December 14, 2025) wrote to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to set up a pump storage and run-of-the river hydroelectric projects in the Kaimur to make Bihar energy self-sufficient.

In light of the increasing peak-hour electricity demand in Bihar, Sudhakar Singh has put forward the proposal to the state government. In the letter he has demanded that the establishment of hydroelectric projects should be prioritised.

Mr. Singh stated that Bihar is a state with an emerging economy, where the demand for electricity is rapidly increasing due to industrial development, agriculture, irrigation, urbanization, and domestic use.

“The availability of electricity, especially during peak hours, is becoming a major challenge. Therefore, the state needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and take concrete steps towards clean, green, and sustainable energy sources,” Mr. Singh stated.

He explained that several rivers, including the Durgawati, Kuhira, Karmanasha, and Suara, originate from the Kaimur Hills, and important reservoirs like the Durgawati and Jagdahwa already exist. By harnessing these natural resources, additional power can be immediately provided during peak hours through pump storage technology, without wasting water.

Mr. Singh stated that a pump storage power plant with a capacity of over 2,000 MW could be developed at the Durgawati Reservoir Project, and approximately 500 MW at the Jagdahwa Reservoir on the Kuhira River.

Additionally, the potential for generating approximately 250 MW of power in the Kaimur region using run-of-the-river technology has already been identified, and now needs to be implemented soon.

He asserted that these projects will not only strengthen Bihar‘s energy self-sufficiency, but will also play a crucial role in environmental protection, carbon emissions reduction, employment generation for local youth, and the overall development of the Kaimur region.

The Buxar MP has requested the State Government to conduct surveys on priority basis for these projects and take necessary policy and administrative decisions soon, so that Bihar can be included in the category of leading states of the country in the field of clean and green energy.

He has mentioned in the letter that previously he had informed the Energy Minister of Bihar about this matter through a letter dated July 11, 2021 but no action has been taken.
