A large number of young spectators chanted his name as Mohammed Siraj warmed up for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League fixture against Mumbai at the MCA Stadium on Friday.

As Hyderabad won the toss and opted to bowl, Siraj did not disappoint his fans. He claimed three wickets to skittle Mumbai out for 131, before openers Tanmay Agarwal (75, 40b, 7×4, 4×6) and Aman Rao (52 not out, 29b, 5×4, 3×6) forged a 127-run partnership to guide Hyderabad to a nine-wicket win against the defending champion.

With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ajinkya Rahane around, an aggressive Mumbai brought up 30 runs in three overs, before left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan removed the latter. But things went haywire as Mumbai lost wickets in clusters, before Hardik Tamore and Suryansh Shedge forged a 45-run stand for the sixth wicket. Siraj came up with a fiery second spell, claiming three wickets in nine balls and conceding just a couple of runs.

Chasing a relatively small target, youngster Aman set the tone by picking up 24 runs in Shardul Thakur’s opening over. After conceding three fours and a couple of sixes, the Mumbai captain did not bowl further. As the dew set in, Tanmay took Mumbai bowlers to the cleaners.

Record chase

At the DY Patil Academy ground, history was created as Jharkhand pulled off the highest-ever chase in the history of the tournament, beating Punjab by six wickets. After Salil Arora’s unbeaten 45-ball-125 guided Punjab to 235 for 6, Jharkhand made the run chase look so easy with Kumar Kushagra’s unbeaten 86 runs off 42 balls. As Kushagra dealt in fours and sixes, Jharkhand romped home with 11 balls to spare.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh defeated Andhra by four wickets, despite Nitish Kumar Reddy rattling the top-order with a hattrick. For MP, seamer Tripuresh Singh struck early with two wickets, before mystery spinner Shivam Shukla’s four-for bundled out Andhra for 112.

Defending a low total, Nitish took a hattrick, with the wickets of Harsh Gawli, Harpreet Singh and captain Rajat Patidar. However, Rishabh Chouhan and Rahul Batham’s 73-run stand for the fifth wicket turned the tide in MP’s way.

The scores: Mumbai 131 in 18.5 overs (Mohammed Siraj 3/21) lost to Hyderabad 132/1 in 11.5 overs (Tanmay Agarwal 75, Aman Rao 52 n.o.).

Rajasthan 132/8 in 20 overs (Mahipal Lomror 37 n.o., Shubham Garhwal 33, Anshul Kamboj 2/24, Ishant Bhardwaj 2/24) lost to Haryana 133/3 in 16.2 overs (Ankit Kumar 60).

Andhra 112 in 19.1 overs (K.S. Bharat 39, Shivam Shukla 4/23, Tripuresh Singh 3/31) lost to Madhya Pradesh 113/6 in 17.3 overs (Rishabh Chouhan 47, Rahul Batham 35; Nitish Reddy 3/17).

Punjab 235/6 in 20 overs (Salil Arora 125 n.o.) lost to Jharkhand 237/4 in 18.1 overs (Kumar Kushagra 86 n.o.)
