CBDT launches second campaign to ‘nudge’ taxpayers to disclose foreign assets, income

CBDT launches second campaign to ‘nudge’ taxpayers to disclose foreign assets, income

Posted on November 27, 2025 By admin

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is launching the second edition of its ‘Nudge’ campaign where it sends emails and messages to taxpayers to revise their returns as it has found several cases where taxpayers have foreign assets that they have not declared.

The first edition of this Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable (NUDGE) campaign, launched in November 2024, resulted in taxpayers revising their returns and disclosing foreign assets amounting to ₹29,208 crore, along with foreign-source income of Rs 1,089.88 crore, the CBDT said in a release.

The CBDT has signed agreements with various countries under which it receives information relating to foreign financial assets of residents of India from these partner jurisdictions.

“This information assists in identifying potential discrepancies and guiding taxpayers towards timely and accurate compliance,” the CBDT said. It added that an analysis of data received through this Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework for 2024-25 has identified high-risk cases where foreign assets “appear to exist but have not been reported in the ITRs filed for AY 2025-26”.

These identified taxpayers will be sent SMSs and emails from November 28 onwards, advising them to review and revise their returns on or before December 31, 2025, so as to avoid penal consequences.

According to sources in the Income Tax Department, about 25,000 cases would initially be targeted, with the campaign being widened from mid-December.

The Department is also bringing in big companies whose employees have foreign assets and have not disclosed them to sensitise their employees.
