Days after Bangladesh sent an extradition request for deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the request was being “examined”.

“The request is being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes. We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Ms. Hasina was handed the death sentence on November 17 following which the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh had urged India to hand her over citing the extradition treaty.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossein said on Sunday (November 23) that a letter seeking extradition of Ms. Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was sent last week to the MEA. Diplomatic sources had informed that the letter was sent through the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.

Bangladesh is also trying several other members of Ms. Hasina’s government under charges of being responsible for “enforced disappearances” and these individuals too are expected to get adverse verdicts from the International Crimes Tribunal.
