Ranji Trophy | Jharkhand posts innings win over TN

Tamil Nadu slumped to an innings defeat to Jharkhand on the fourth day of the first-round Ranji Trophy Elite Group-A match at Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science ground here on Saturday.

Winning by an innings and 114 runs, Jharkhand now has seven points in its kitty.

After nightwatcher Hemchudeshan (three) was beaten on the outside edge to be bowled by pacer Sahil Raj, Shikhar Mohan took an absolute stunner at short leg to dismiss B. Indrajith (22). Indrajith went forward to off-spinner Rishav Raj (four for 49) and tried to turn the ball to the leg side, but the ball looped off his bat, and Mohan leapt backwards to grab a one-handed catch. He did well not to ground the ball when he turned and fell face down, too.

A 100-run sixth-wicket stand between Andre Siddarth (80, 180b, 12×4) and Shahrukh Khan (37, 66b, 5×4) ensued.

Shahrukh frequently shouldered arms to spinners, and was also solid with his block until the one time he missed and was leg-before by left-arm spinner Anukul Roy. He earlier charged at Anukul twice for fours to the cover and the straight boundary, and remarkably played a blistering straight drive off Sahil for a four.

But the way Andre batted on the day has to be the biggest takeaway for Tamil Nadu from an otherwise forgettable match.

A dashing strokemaker by default, Andre had —to show self-restraint. The knock showcased his defensive ability. He looked so assured of his footwork against the spinners – surely committing to play either on the front foot or back foot, never uncertain. His forward block was as firm as a barn door slamming shut on the bowler.

He spectacularly played an on drive, a back foot straight drive, a step-out cover drive, an imperious aerial cut, a delicately steered cut, an inside-out, and the flick twice for fours. The only time he played the slog sweep, he missed and was bowled off Anukul.

The scores: Jharkhand — 1st innings: 419.

Tamil Nadu — 1st innings: 93.

Tamil Nadu — 2nd innings: R.S. Ambrish b Rishav 15, N. Jagadeesan c Kishan b Sahil 21, Pradosh Ranjan Paul c Virat b Rishav 8, Andre Siddarth b Anukul 80, Hemchudeshan b Sahil 3, B. Indrajith c Mohan b Rishav 22, Shahrukh Khan lbw b Anukul 37, D.T. Chandrasekar c Virat b Rishav 1, Gurjapneet Singh (not out) 13, Sandeep Warrier lbw b Anukul 0, B. Sachin (absent hurt); Extras (b-6, lb-5, nb-1): 12; Total (in 79 overs): 212.

Fall of wickets: 1-33, 2-41, 3-49, 4-60, 5-93, 6-193, 7-198, 8-198, 9-212.

Jharkhand bowling: Sahil 15-5-28-2, Vikash 11-3-36-0, Jatin 10-3-34-0, Rishav 19-4-49-4, Anukul 21-8-42-3, Mohan 2-0-8-0, Kishan 1-0-4-0.
