The Union Government on Monday (September 22, 2025) sanctioned the release of 25 lakh additional LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) during the ongoing financial year (2025-26). As a result of the latest round of disbursal, the total connections distributed under the scheme since its inception would stand at 10.58 crore.

Launched in 2016, the primary objective of the scheme is to provide LPG connections to women from poor households without having to pay for installation, first refill, hose, regulator and stove. The costs are borne entirely by the government and oil marketing companies (OMCs). The first instalment of PMUY had managed to provide 8 crore connections. The second instalment of the scheme was launched in August 2021 with segregated targets spanning between 2022 and 2024. As of July this year, the scheme has managed to provide more than 10.33 crore LPG connections across the country. In fact, this August, the government had approved targeted subsidy of ₹300 for every 14.2 kg cylinder and extended the eligible number of refills to 9 per year.

The latest round

The government would be spending ₹676 crore for the release of these connections, which includes ₹512.5 crore for providing deposit-free connections at ₹2,050 per connection; ₹160 crore for the targeted subsidy announced in August, and ₹3.5 crore towards project management and administration expenses, among other things.
