Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Tuesday (September 2, 2025) said Andhra Pradesh was poised for a major leap in the power sector, with AP-Genco and AP Power Development Corporation Limited (APPDCL) recording a generation of over 16,000 Million Units (MU) of coal-fired power in April-August 2025, marking a 20.30% growth over the corresponding period last year.

Addressing a review meeting on the power sector, Mr. Ravi Kumar noted that while thermal generation by AP-Genco improved by nearly 20.30%, renewable energy output (hydel and solar combined) rose from 1,652 MU in April-August 2024 to 2,270 MU in the same period of 2025.

He said the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) works at the 800-MW units of Narla Tatarao and Rayalaseema Thermal Power Stations were progressing as per schedule and were targeted for completion by the year-end.

Mr. Ravi Kumar underscored the importance of renovating and modernising ageing thermal units alongside adding new capacity.

On hydropower generation, he said the Polavaram Hydro Electric Project (12×80 MW), as well as preliminary works on the Lower Sileru (2×115 MW) and Upper Sileru Pumped Storage (9×150 MW) projects, were moving ahead at a brisk pace.

The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable power supply, scaling up renewable energy, and strengthening infrastructure to meet future demand. He directed AP-Genco and APPDCL to maintain adequate coal stocks, enhance coordination with suppliers, expedite railway connectivity, and adopt efficient coal handling systems.

AP-Genco MD K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, Directors M. Sujay Kumar, P. Ashok Kumar Reddy and V. Usha, APPDCL Director Srinivasa Rao, and other senior officials were present.

The Minister appreciated Mr. Chakradhar Babu and his team for achieving a generation of over 1,000 MU on September 2, which, he said, not only surpassed the annual target for 2025–26 but also marked a milestone in two decades.
