Presenting the Union Budget for 2025 in the Parliament on Saturday (February 1, 2025), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman listed measures to expand affordable housing. Ms. Sitharaman announced that 40,000 units of housing would be completed in 2025-26 to help families which have taken loans to buy apartments, while also paying rents for other dwellings since the apartments were not yet ready. This will form part of the Special Window for Affordable and Mid-income housing scheme (SWAMIH).

She apprised the Parliament that the scheme had carved 50,000 dwelling units in stressed housing projects, with keys being handed over to the buyers as well.

Ms Sitharaman further announced the formation of SWAMIH 2 fund worth ₹15,000 crore, building on the success of its predecessor. This scheme will aim for the expeditious completion of another one lakh housing units. The SWAMIH 2 fund will be established as a blended finance facility with contribution from the Government, banks and private investors.

This is the record eighth budget being presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman – taking her closer to the record ten budgets presented by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
