Sci-Five | The Hindu Science Quiz: On Epimetheus

This image made by the Cassini spacecraft and provided by NASA on March 12, 2006, shows two of Saturn’s moons, the small Epimetheus and smog-enshrouded Titan, with Saturn’s A and F rings stretching across the frame. Launched in 1997, Cassini reached Saturn in 2004 and has been exploring it from orbit ever since. Cassini’s fuel tank is almost empty, so NASA has opted for a risky, but science-rich grand finale.

START THE QUIZ

1 / 5 |
What is the origin of the name “Epimetheus”?

  • It was named after the Greek god of foresight.
  • It was named after the Roman god of water.
  • It was named after the Greek titan of hindsight.
  • It was named after a Babylonian deity.

The name Epimetheus comes from the Greek god (or titan) Epimetheus (or hindsight) who was the brother of Prometheus (foresight).

What is the shape of Epimetheus, and what feature contributes to its appearance?

  • Spherical with a smooth surface
  • Potato-shaped with flattening at the south pole
  • Oval-shaped with no notable features
  • Disk-shaped due to rapid rotation

Epimetheus is a potato-shaped moon. Its shape reflects pronounced flattening at the Epimethean South Pole associated with the remains of a large crater.

Which spacecraft confirmed the existence of both Janus and Epimetheus in 1980?

  • Voyager II
  • Cassini
  • Voyager I
  • Hubble Space Telescope

As Voyager 1 approached Saturn in 1980, its instruments provided highly detailed images of the planet and its moons. These images definitively showed two distinct moons, Janus and Epimetheus, sharing nearly identical orbits.

4 / 5 |
What unique orbital characteristic do Janus and Epimetheus share?

  • They orbit on opposite sides of Saturn.
  • They share the same orbit.
  • They orbit at the same speed as Saturn rotates.
  • They orbit within the F ring.

Janus and Epimetheus share their orbits with a faint dust ring around Saturn, now called the Janus/Epimetheus Ring.

What are the alternative designations for Epimetheus?

  • S/1966 S1 and Saturn XI
  • S/1980 S3 and Saturn XI
  • S/1980 S1 and Saturn V
  • S/1981 S3 and Saturn IX

Astronomers also refer to Epimetheus as Saturn XI and as S/1980 S3.
