Malayalam film actor Mohanlal officially launched the inaugural edition of Kerala Cricket League (KCL) at a function held here on Saturday.

The actor, who is the brand ambassador of the KCL, unveiled the trophy along with Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman in the presence of the six franchise owners and players of the competing teams. The theme song of the KCL was also released.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohanlal expressed hope that there will be a regular presence of Kerala players in the Indian cricket team and that KCL will fuel the passion for the game in the State. He also complimented Kerala Cricket Association’s efforts to build infrastructure in the State and added that it was the reason for Kerala’s improved show at the national level.

The Sports Minister opined that new leagues in cricket (KCL) and football (KSL) can contribute a lot to Kerala’s economy and added that the Government was hoping that sports would be able to contribute three to five per cent to the State’s economy in the future.

KCA president Jayesh George and secretary Vinod S. Kumar also spoke on the occasion. Actor Keerthi Suresh, the Goodwill Ambassador of Kerala women’s cricket, and KCL chairman Nazar Machan were also present. The KCL will begin at the Sports Hub (Greenfield Stadium) on Monday.
