Making sense of the blue shift in U.S. midterm election | a collection

Democrats seized control of U.S. Congress after the midterm election on Tuesday (November 3, 2026), winning the Senate and House in a nationwide rebuke of President Donald Trump, likely limiting the rest of his term.

In a massive blue wave across the country, Trump’s Republican Party faced stunning defeats in its strongholds Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, where it lost the Governor’s posts to the Democrats. The Grand Old Party (GOP) also faced a drubbing in Senate races in Texas, Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, where Trump campaigned with a simple message, urging voters to pretend that he was on the ballot.

In a historic turn of events in U.S. political history, Texas Democrat James Talarico, a former teacher who ran on a “politics of love”, defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton to win a Senate seat—the first Democrat statewide winner since 1994. Separately, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending decades of Republican rule. Abdul El-Sayed defeated former Republican lawmaker Mike Rogers in Michigan to become the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress.
