Our choices and beliefs are shaped, often unknowingly, by what we consume on social media, says theatre director Maheedar. His new play, reel-ISM, staged this weekend in Hyderabad, explores how reels and digital dependence affect modern relationships.

Maheedar, who wrote and stars in the 65-minute play in Telugu and English, tells the story of a couple navigating love and conflict. The drama’s themes, he says, are universal. “The story could be about anybody or anything. The influence of social media is everywhere, in urban and rural areas alike.”
The founder of The Actors Lab drew inspiration from the intense relationship dramas and abstract plays he read as a theatre student, using social media to give these themes a contemporary lens. “What we consume online has seeped deep into our lives. It shapes our likes, dislikes and decisions, and we apply those choices even when there is no need.”
Featuring just two actors, the production breaks from conventional theatre with a minimalist set, smart lighting, unusual props and bold colours. Popular Bollywood and Telugu songs play in the background, adding a musical layer to the drama.

Originally from Visakhapatnam, Maheedhar moved to Hyderabad in 2018 to become an actor. After a brief stint in cinema, he enrolled in a master’s programme in theatre arts at the University of Hyderabad to explore different aspects of the craft. He went on to act in plays and teach drama to school and college students, including at GITAM Hyderabad.
While he has been training theatre and film enthusiasts since 2023, hs initiative, The Actors Lab, offers drama courses, learning modules and training for aspirants.
