Namakkal Corporation has extended its support to a women’s Self-Help Group (SHG) to convert flower waste into value-added products.
In Namakkal, 200 kg of flower waste is generated every day, including at the Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple, the Narasimhar Temple, and the flower market at Namakkal Old Bus Stand. To convert the flower waste into value-added products (cup sambrani), the Corporation has provided land to a women’s SHG at Kosavampatti. A donor donated machines for manufacturing the incense, and on October 22, the SHG began their production. On behalf of the Corporation, 100 kg of flower waste will be provided to the group.
Officials attached to the Corporation said that the SHG members will collect the flower waste directly using their own vehicle. Efforts are under way to collect flower waste from other temples in the Corporation limits soon, through which, an additional 100 kg flower waste would be procured, officials added.
Namakkal Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji said that flowers offered to deities at the temples and flowers from the market are utilised to manufacture the incenses. Through this initiative, flower waste will be converted into value-added products for marketing and sale. This initiative to transform waste into a resource is an important step towards environment protection. “The objective is to reduce waste, make effective use of natural resources, promote sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of women,” the Commissioner added.
