Suru Valley, around 90 km from Kargil in Ladakh and 290 km from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, is steeped in a rich and harmonious cultural heritage. Tucked away in the Himalayas, it is surrounded by glacial deposits and famous peaks.
The valley is primarily inhabited by the Purgi people of Tibetan descent, representing a unique historical blend of Islamic and Buddhist traditions.
While the lower valley follows Islamic traditions, the higher reaches remain deeply connected to the Buddhist heritage of neighbouring Zanskar.
The locals maintain a traditional agrarian lifestyle rooted in hospitality and spiritual devotion. Isolated from heavy commercialisation, the valley preserves an authentic way of life, where centuries-old customs, local Ladakhi-Balti cuisine and communal farming practices continue to thrive undisturbed.
The second Suru Summer Festival, recently organised by the Ladakh administration, focused on promoting Kargil as a premier sustainable, cultural and adventure tourism destination, while creating greater livelihood and employment opportunities for local communities.
As part of the event, various adventure activities were organised at different locations. A cycle rally, paragliding, river rafting and rock climbing were among the highlights of the festival.
The Department of Tourism and Culture, local entrepreneurs, social media influencers and other stakeholders joined hands for the festival to promote the region’s traditional culture, cuisine, attire and language.
Suru Valley, which features in National Geographic’s tourism listings, is gaining appeal among travellers while remaining a relatively unexplored destination.
The administration plans to expand the festival’s footprint across the broader district, including Drass and Zanskar.
